Thank you to all of you who responded to my first post from the other week. What a great place this is! I hope that someday I can help others here the way I have been helped so far.
Tuesday we took him to a Neurologist. They did an MRI. The MRI showed an old stroke (we have never been aware that he had a stroke, so that was news to us) and signs of mini strokes. Then he went for an EEG. That showed significantly slowed brain activity, as well as seizure activity. Apparently he's been having small seizures in his sleep.
He has been diagnosed with Alzheimer's. He is now on Aricept to hopefully slow the progression down a bit. He's progressing rapidly, more confused each day.
I have completed an application for him to be admitted to our region's VAMC... an excellent facility. My mother is doing her best to care for him, and I am going up 2-3x/week (they live 100 miles away, and I work and have a family, so I'm doing all that I can). I take them to all of his dr appts.
My husband and I have started cleaning things out, removing valuables that we are selling for my mom, and other things that can pose a danger (hunting rifles, etc... they are all gone). I take it one day at a time. I will be relieved when he gets placed, which should be in 4-5 weeks. He may need to be hospitalized before then.
Sounds like you have a handle on things. We with AD generally take an antidepressant. As for an antipsychotic,I have found Seroquel to be the best with the least side affects.........
