I didn’t see an Introduction/Welcome forum so I may not be posting this in the correct spot.
I am not a personal caregiver. I have worked in Assisted Living/Retirement for 8 years. I am in daily contact with residents who have Alzheimer’s or other Dementia-related diseases. My heart goes out to them.
There is very little Dementia training in these facilities which I find disturbing. If we are going to be around them, we should learn how to care for them properly.
I’ve developed a keen urge to learn all I can and to teach others so I hope joining this forum will help me in that respect.
Thank you for having me.
Barbara

Welcome to ECO, SS. We can always use more experienced CGs around here. Interesting background, you have there. Yes, this forum does things a little differently than some. In most rooms the newest post is at the top. There are some threads that are many pages long and if you are here regularly, it saves a lot of time to have the newest post be the first one. Well, maybe not, but it doesn't take long to get used to it.

Let us know if you have any questions about finding your way around here or using any of the features. Glad to meet you.

MW, I thought Arkansas was 20 years behind, LOL, sorry. Believe me, I doubt you are even 20 seconds behind my neighborhood.

Hahaha! It's been 11 years but, sometimes, it feels like yesterday. My memories are very vivid on my time there.

Ha! I have no idea! All I can do is try to educate my co-workers and continue the work I'm doing on my website.

Bunny, your siggy brings back memories of when I lived in Arkansas--that was a standard phrase there! Too funny!

SeniorSafari, excellent forum you have put together. When searching for information and insight, one can never have to much information.
I am no longer a caregiver but continue to want to read others experiences and the latest information that will enlighten others.
I also am aware of the lack of training many receive who are intrusted with the care of a loved one.It is some agencies dirty little secret. But, that always indicates the lack ofgood people that are entering this field.possibly the pay scale , or the lack of interest in helping the weak .After all we have people go into nursing because of the good pay and not the compassion for the well being of others.NOT ALL HAVE THIS ATTITUDE BUT ONE IS TOO MANY

Oh I see! This forum goes backwards! You have to read from the bottom up. How weird is that? OR, is there a setting I'm missing that I can change?

Thank you for the warm welcome!
Yes, one place I worked only gave us 6 hours of training per year and that was all in one day. It was done very rushed with no details, just data to read.
I started my website to educate others and to encourage caregivers to read, read, read! I do book reviews and have links to other very important sites.
It will be wonderful to gain more knowledge here! Smile

A hearty welcome to you SS I am SO glad to hear you want to learn how to properly deal with your patients!
There is certainly not enough training in facilities today and what I have seen is truly pitiful.
I hope you make a difference with your staff so welcome aboard and take a moment (or several Razz ) to read here, there is a lot of useful information and techniques we use everyday in this journey that makes a difference in the lives of our LO's Wink

Hi and welcome! Smile

12 Down on the forum page is the New Caregivers Meeting Room. Although you aren't really new at this, obviously. Smile

I'm sure we may be able to learn from you as well. I'm very, very encouraged by your effort to self educate. I often wonder myself why there isn't more eldercare and dementia training. But, there better be because the baby/elder boom is coming! Watch out world!
