I finally got in to seeing my ortho doc today. I've had pain in my ankle since I painted Mom's bathroom 1-1/2 weeks ago.
I was hoping it was just arthritis. Get a quick shot in the ankle and be on my way. After x-rays, doc walks in, and asks what I think it is. I said arthritis. He said "no, not that easy, you have a fracture". Had I known they were going to put a cast on my foot, I'd got someone to drive me! I now have a bright pink cast that matches my bright pink toenails. At least they have designer colors for casts now. I haven't broken or fractured a limb since I was a baby. So this is the first cast I can remember. This ought to be fun bathing! |

Glad Mom has 2 walkers, a shower chair, and I'd installed 3 grab bars in the shower!
So far the easiest things I've done since this has happened is take a shower, and drive. Shower was a piece of cake. Our home heath nurse said wrap the cast in Glad Wrap. I put my towel on the toilet, and that gives me a cushion to prop my foot on. Sit on the shower chair, and pull the curtain. Feel stupid but it works. I get out faster than before, cause I don't have to do both legs Got to laugh about this chit! Now hunting for easy to fix stuff at the store on a scooter was a trip. Mom almost called 911 on me I was gone so long! I never look at the frozen tv dinner section, so it was like a new huge menu. And you ever try to get something out of those things on a scooter? Opening the door is the hard part. When I got home, baby sis had got my email. She told Mom's old next door neighbor (they work at same place). He'd called his wife. His wife called Mom who was freaking. She calls him back, who tells baby sis, who calls my big sis!! And the 2 stores are less than 3 blocks away! I'm trying to take it as easy as I can, since I don't know how I fractured that right leg except for painting for 12 hours one day, with flip flops on. I don't need matching legs. I've only dropped some cornstarch in the cast 1 time for itch. So far, the most of the itching I can reach from the top. And yea, this thing is heavy to drag around. The later in the day, the worse it hurts, still. I have been doing as little as possible around the house. Using Mom's other walker that has 2 wheels most of the time. When I need to move stuff from point a to point b, I use hers which has a basket, and a seat to put stuff on. I'll get through this, dunno if Mom will though, lol |

I'd SO get one of my artist friends to airbrush that cast to look like it was tattooed.
Hope it doesn't last long and that you can at least graduate to the aircast on your next visit. At least you can take those off to scratch and bathe. |

Brenda!! You and Bev!!! Take care of yourself and be extra watchful about falling - when one has a busted limb, it's easier to get off balance because of the bum leg and fall fanny over teakettle!!
Plastic knitting needles will reach a long way down into a cast!! "She ain't heavy; she's my mother." Mom got her wings 11/18/2008 |

I go back to him July 6th. Hoping I can get this confounded thing off then, and something more doable.
Bunny's grl, I read the written instructions he gave me. For itching directions says use cornstarch in it. That and a blow dryer on cold. Last night my ankle itched for the first time when I was trying to sleep, and you can guess what the first thing I did! Yep, reached down to scratch it. Had I known it was anything worse than arthritis, I would have had someone take me to the doc yesterday. Good thing I was late getting out, and the parking lot was cleared out. I practiced around the parking lot, before getting on the street and driving. I'm SO glad his office was only about a mile away from home! And yep, BC my car is automatic. Fulltime, looks like we are both screwed for a while! Maybe we can get my 95 year old Mom to take care of us, if you come here! |

Owie! We'd be sunk around here if I couldn't drive. As it is, we're barely keeping up.
Did he say how long you had to wear the cast? |
