Mom hates the place they moved her to for therapy. She'll be there 21 days.
I hate the place too. Her oxygen machine is LOUD, the tv from the lady beside her was blaring, there isn't enough room but for 1 visitor, and they would NOT let Pam (mom's sitter) stay over night. I think Mom was more upset about Pam not being able to sit with her than anything else. Her dinner came cold. She didn't touch it. The room was so hot, I was sweating. Pam said the place stunk like pee. I'm a smoker so I couldn't tell. But it sure could have been cleaner. Mom wanted to go home. Pam wanted me to bring her home tonight. But I knew Pam only does 12 hour shifts. Where would that leave me, the other 12 hours a day, and weekends? Screwed. Dunno if I should try to move her to another facility or not. Wondering if she hates the place, she'll work twice as hard to get well. Or am I just thinking like Bert? I cried, dunno what to do. She'll be there till the 23rd of this month. Meantime, I'm on a blood thinner for my blood clot in my leg. I go back Monday for more blood work, and he said he might order me another doppler test. I feel so helpless. The only reason I picked this place is we know the person in charge of Physical therapy. I know nothing about any of the other places here. |

It sounds like things are shaping up about as good as we ever get. Hang in there my dear, thank you Pam.

I'm taking it easy, and my foot is propped up right now. Ok, you all happy with me now?
I go back to my GP at 3:15 for blood work and a possible doppler. Today, staying home, and letting Bert handle it Bert had yesterday off. He's been driving back and forth since she feel. I knew after his move, he hadn't unpacked. Sis is getting her AC in her car looked at. She has mine, so I now have cab service....I ain't quite as dumb as some think I am. I went down for a while yesterday. They brought her chicken salad (one of the 2 things, she doesn't eat). Thats what I was afraid of, so went to the cafeteria, and got her something she would eat, then got my ride home. Pam is with her today, and Bert is almost there. I been on the phone with Social Services trying to get her where we want her, and they wanted my plan B too. Tried to call her doc, and not getting an answer. Ok, while making this post, they called and she doesn't meet the criteria to get where we want her. So suppose the'll do the other place as our plan B. Foot is still propped up.. I know I have to take care of me, so I can take care of her when she gets home. Jimmy & amy sat with her yesterday till 2. I got up there, and stayed till 5, with 2 pillows and kept foot up till I had to go downstairs (close to the elevator she's close to) get her something she would eat. Plan B is about 1 mile from here. Dunno when they'll move her there, today or tomorrow. |

I had a couple loved ones land in hellholes temporarily when they had to be discharged from the hospital to a NH for awhile, choices were few and I wasn't familiar with any of them nor was there time to investigate. Some hellholes can look so pretty from the outside but once you see what's really going on...
Fortunately, my los also got out of these places fast, and I"m glad you were able to get your mother moved, though at the expense of an injury - - not cool. The facility will cover their butts - investigation - HA! I don't think it's easy for anyone to stay totally off their feet in the real world, whether it's because they're a cg, have a full-time job they can't afford to miss, kids to raise, whatever... However, keep doing your absolute best to stay off it cause blood clots can be nasty things and you don't need to end up with a worse problem. I hope when you go back to the doc today that you get some good news. Take care. "Whatever tomorrow brings, I"ll be there-with open arms and open eyes" |

OK, I'm going to be a little bossy -- I hope you'll forgive me. If a doc told your Mom to keep her foot elevated because of a potentially life-threatening clot but she kept trying to do all the normal things that need doing instead, how would you react? Think about it -- I know you want to help your mom but what help will she have if you're gone entirely?

I called at the right time this morning. Doc on call walked in. Amy handed the phone to him. (thank God they are down there).
Trying to get her lung doc involved so she can go where we really want her to go for therapy. This doc said her regular gp will be back tomorrow. (doc on call today isn't one I went to school with). Jimmy and Amy said they would stay till 2pm. I'll get up there somehow. |

I spent the day in the hospital with Mom. Yea,yea, yea,I know my foot is supposed to stay elevated. Just don't have enough family to watch over her. But I will go to the doc appt Monday.
I missed Mom's doc this am. Doc that was on call, went to school with me and remembered Mom running the school cafeteria for 8 years. Friend sat with Mom for a while till I got up there. Her and hubby coming to sit with her for a while in the morning too. Bert needs a day off. He's been driving 1 hour each way since Mom fell. He certainly needs a day off. He's 71. Still hasn't unpacked from his last move. Mom fell right after his move. He said the way things are today, he's taking tomorrow off. He feels more comfortable. They'll keep her till at least Monday. She ate a great dinner tonight. Tore it up good! We were all pleased about that. I'm going to get a bath, and get off this foot. |

Not at all - it's a potential HIPPA violation. Take one anyway if you need to document something. Just don't show it to them... "She ain't heavy; she's my mother." Mom got her wings 11/18/2008 |

Holy cow! Is it possible that her doctor might make some sort of official complaint against that nursing home? I understand that patients fall, but at least in our state, the facility is required to notify the family immediately of any injury or potential injury to their loved one. We've even gotten calls in the wee hours of the morning when our LO decided to get out of bed on her own. They call us about every tiny scratch or bruise.
And a blow to the head while she is on blood thinners ... very dangerous. But nobody knows what happened? And your family had to notice on your own that she was injured? That is criminal. A complaint by her doctor might get more attention from whatever agency is responsible for these nursing homes, if only to protect the other patients whose unsuspecting families left their loved ones in their care. So glad you got your mom the heck out of there. I am absolutely seething over this. This message has been edited. Last edited by: T.O.R.P., |

Yea, I know BC timing couldn't be worse on all of this. Usually all this with Mom wears on me mentally.
I had one of Mom's dear friends go down there this morning. Bert moved last week, or the week before, and still hasn't got unpacked. I tried talking him into a day off since he has an hour drive both ways (he's 71). He refused. At least this time, Mom isn't 1/2 mile from both elevators. I'm glad Bert is stepping up to the plate, the way I'd like him to. Mom's sister raised him, so I'm shocked he'd do as much as he has when crisis hits. An hour both ways does wear on you, been there done that when my father was in the VA hospital, over where Bert lives. I have the dogs back so I won't be lying when I tell Mom they ok, and miss her. Happy 4th everyone. |

WALKED AROUND!! I know timing can't be worse, these places have to be inspected, or .... I had sooo hoped you would get lucky. You really need another sort of break right now. Kudos to Bert and Pam for getting her out of there so fast. Bert really seems to have learned a lot since you started this journey. I hope he and Pam can be your eyes, ears, and legs for a little while. Now please, please, be careful with yourself. You need to be on the blood thinner, but that makes you vulnerable to other injury and bruising. * the crystal ball (*) is in the shop>>>> |

She's out of that place, thank God!!!!!
Bert made them think it was their idea to send her back to ER. When they made that decision, I packed ALL her chit! Somehow, mom has a huge bump/bruise/cut on her forehead, and none of them seem to know how it happened! They said they are "investigating" it. This chit don't frigging fly with me. Her feet are swole up bad, and hands too. Pam said there was dried blood on her nose down to her lips when she got there this morning. So we spent the rest of the afternoon/evening in the ER again. Pam came with us, and stayed a good long time. Bert finally told Pam she could go home. She was a big help, explaining what she saw when she arrived at the NH at 10AM today to the ER doc and nurses. They ran a lot of tests, and found she has fluid on her lungs. They also ran a brain scan cause of the huge bruise/cut. With pulmonary problems I found out this morning, she could go back to the LTC facility she was at last fall. At least that place is better than any nursing home/rehab we have around. They had Mom knocked out on something for nausea when I got to the NH/rehab. And she was knocked out really good. Her doc doesn't give her that krap because of that. There is another med he gives her when she's nausiated that doesn't put her out like a light. Come to find out, when Bert came and picked me up this afternoon, he did NOT like the place yesterday at all. But he didn't tell me, cause he wanted me to see what I thought for myself. We went to another place thats been recommented by several I know, and walked around in there like we knew where we were going. I even talked to a lady in there and asked her if they are any good. She said she'd been there 3 times, and they were wonderful. Their record from what I saw on the interent for pressure sores was wonderful. Better than any other I checked out last night on the interent. So if we have to ever put her somewhere when she's not having pulmonary issuses for 21 days, I think that will be the place. Thank GOD today is over, and she's out of that hell hole!! |

Good on your doctor for fussing at you! Mom can cope, even if she's not happy about it, being in rehab for three weeks. She WON'T be able to cope with you permanently disabled or even dead because you failed to take care of yourself. And if your mom was in her right mind, she would tell you the same thing.
Sorry to sound harsh, but my friend, these blood clots are nothing to mess around with. |

I don't know what to say except I am praying for comfort for you. I can't imagine how you are managing all of this going on and I hope you are taking care of your self. You have offered me such good advice since I have been around and always there to listen to me and my complaints. I am way too new at this to offer advice, but I can offer my shoulder to cry on and my ears to listen.
Peace for you...... |

Also Pam will be with her 5 days a week. Since they won't let her stay nights. I was shocked she offered to work days, since she wanted nights.
Pam was upset they wouldn't even let her stay last night, after they agreed to let her stay just the first night. I think that place don't want anyone "straightening them out" like Pam will. They won't even allow you to bring a camera in there. Is that strange or what???? I'm keeping Pam during visiting hours cause with this blood clot in my leg, I know Pam will call me if things ain't coshure. But she's off this weekend. She'll be back Monday. |

Btw, all the places on the list they gave me at the hospital were nursing/rehab centers.
