I am almost in tears here. Dh fell today trying to get from the bathroom to his recliner in the living room, not a long walk, but for him it was impossible. He called me and I jumped and got the kitchen chair which is on rollers up to him, but he just went down on me. I had to call for help to get him up and into his recliner. He asked me to go and get him a walker, which I did, but at this point he is not able to use it. He uses his urinal at his chair, and we were able to get him onto the kitchen chair which has arms and casters and out to the table for dinner, then back to the recliner. I said we could use the chair to get him to bed later, and he said he would probably just sleep in his recliner. I will stay out there with him and if he isn't moving a little better by Monday I will call his doctor.

Paperwork is coming together, I pulled all the cards from his wallet and copied front and back. Will keep a master copy in file and make copies to carry with me. All other pertinent documents are ready to copy. So glad I have the all in one printer-scanner-copier. Don't have to run to the office supply store or the grocery store to make copies.

It seems like things are progressing too fast and I am so scared of what is coming. I just can't imagine this apartment without him in it.

No, he wasn't in the military, I think he had problems with his feet that disqualified him. While I am out tomorrow I may stop by the Kennsington and talk to them about Medicaid picking up. And will go over all options with Social Services in the morning, fill out apps for Medicaid and the nursing home. But in the long run, I think I am IT. lol So far, doing okay. I got him into sweat pants that are easier to get on an off, no belt, buttons, or zipper to contend with and have developed a system for getting him dressed and undressed as he gets up with his walker. Just pull down and pull up. lol. Tomorrow should give us some answers as to where we go from here. He is taking things remarkably well and is very undemanding. As long as he has his book, water jug, and favorite programs on TV, he is contented. Our managers came down last evening to check on us as they had seen the ambulance come in in the morning. Gene will install the safety bar and shower hose on Monday. They are super managers and I know if something really bad comes up I can holler at them. Today it is get all the paperwork organized and pertinent numbers into my cell phone.

I am not a church goer, but I firmly believe that the Lord is looking out for us. He found us this apartment where we can manage with a wheelchair and I firmly believe that the future will work itself out, too, with effort on my part and help from the various agencies here.

God bless all of you for your kind thoughts and suggestions. They have been most helpful.

Farmgirl, hang tight, and remember to breathe. Glad your getting documents copied.

I know you said you checked out assisted living. A friend of mine's Mother went into one, and since her (then deceased) husband had been in the military, they paid for a portion of it. She said it took a few months for them to get that started.

So if hubby was in the military (betcha he was), you might want to call that place back, and see if they know anything about that. Need to talk to the person in charge of the financial part. That would be the one that knows (or doesn't know) anything about it.

I think that program was "Aid and assistance".

Worth checking into.

We have checked into assisted living. I don't know if Medicare would cover something like that for dh, but certainly not for me if I wanted to move with him. There is no way I could afford it, it is more than my retirement pay. We will tough it out at home with the help and advice of social services and our doctor. Right now, he is moving pretty good with the walker and I am breathing easier.

While you're checking resources, check on assisted living. The residence where my mom stays is small (under 15 residents) so it doesn't feel like an institution. Quite a few of those have double occupancy rooms or apartments with a sliding scale of fees depending which services are needed. They are not inexpensive but they are less than a nursing home because they (usually) don't handle folks who need a full time nurse -- just a hand with meals, bathing, getting around, etc.

Mae, thanks for your input. Actually, I did call the ambulance this morning and we went to the emergency room. Tests didn't show anything to warrant an admission. However, the dr did write a prescription for a wheelchair rental which we got immediately. Talked to a social worker there and Monday I will go to Social Services and see about Medicaid and fill out the papers for the nursing home, just to be prepared. Will also contact his dr on Monday. After getting the wheelchair into the car, we went to our favorite restaurant for a late breakfast. It was a learning experience for me, getting that chair in and out of the car and dh in and out of the car also. In the restaurant he had to go to the bathroom and a very husky, nice cook helped him with that. Everyone we have come in contact with have been so nice and accomodating.

Right now dh is sleeping in his recliner. I will get the rest of the papers together, just the DPOA to copy and get into my purse (it weighs a ton now). lol

It's all uncharted territory, but I geuss I will learn my way.

I'd say definitely get to the doctor. It's possible that physical and occupational therapists could visit you at home and train both of you how to move about safely, as well as assessing what equipment is needed to help that along. Your doctor can arrange for that as though it is a prescription. No reason you have to go through it alone or learn the hard way -- there are good professionals who can show you the way. :-)

Honey, be VERY cautious with that chair on rollers, OK? Try to back it up against something solid before you get him up and into it, if that is possible. We don't need to hear of both of you being treated for bumps and bruises.
Hugs to you both.

farm girl, sorry to hear of hubbies fall.Of coarse you are frighten. That is normal.A doctor or hospital visit would be wise. Also it will allow you to get the proper equipment to allow him to be moved from place to place.Just think of today and let tommorow happen and deal with it then
