Hello all - have any of you had any success with Seroquil? My father is an 80 year old man suffering from dementia and parkinsons. Needless to say things are difficult at our home. He has worsened substantially over the past week.l Any suggestions for meds?

Time4help, my hubby has parkinsons with dementia. He has LBD which is a little different then AD.He has been on seroquel for quite a while with great success. He began with a low dosage and then progressed to 100 mgs 2 times a day. When hubby was walking he would have to wait about a half hour before attempting to do anything. The Seorquel made him immobile for that amount of time.He also takes exelon with the seroquel. He does suffer from paranoid psychosis and that will always be a contributing factor. The meds calm him to a pont that he is not pgysically or verbally threatening. Also takes an anti depressant.
I can tell at this moment we are preapring for a full moon. His behavior changes so drastically. His is very stoic most of the time.Never responds to anything like we view they should. They will have off days when you feel the meds are not working. Most of those days , when extreme or usually do to something happening physically.Usually not having a good bowel movement or not drinking enough fluids. He gets so agitated that he will not aceept any meds or fluids. In a hour or so I will try again, usually with success. When he is at his worse he does not want me to bother him at all.his words are, "Just leave me the hell alone".From experience I have learned to do just that.I leave the room, do what I have to do , come back and he is receptive to the liquids and meds. I have learned there are something that only walking away with cure. You cannot reason with someone who has no reasoner. But there are so many things he is aware of.It is so far different then my mothers symptoms. But my mother was never nasty to the extent hubby is. HE IS WHAT MY MOTHER WOULD HAVE CALLED A PISTOL PACKING MAMA BUT DADA , mY EXPERIENCE WITH HIM AND MY MOTHER IS, WITH TIME AND BEING FAMILIAR . YOU CANNOT ALMOST PREDICT HOW THEY WILL RESPOND TO CERTAIN THINGS. The behavior is usually worse at certian times of the day. They will fall off that chosen path but not too often.Unti they reach another stage. He seems to remain in the same stage.I am fortunate as I do have doctors from the VA who are so good when it comes to mental problems and finding the right meds with caution. I have found that those who specialize in gheriatric meds are more qualified as well as those psychiatric doctors affiliated with behavioral meds. I have learned not to jump through hoops. All the jumping changes nothing. The disease is what it is and you do the best you can.I no longer pull my hair out because something I try fails.Trial and error is what it is all about. The one thing I never doubt, if he was mobile I could not handle him.He is head strong and continues to have upper body strength. Not a person that would be open to my suggestions. |

No experience with seroquel, but the antidepressant Lexapro sure made our LO with dementia and parkinson's easier to get along with. It took about a month to kick in, but made a world of difference.
In fact, the doctor tried to start phasing her down in her dosage recently, and she got so ornery that the staff at the NH begged the doctor to leave her at her former dosage. We agreed. |

Hi Time4Help, Glad you are here. Sorry that I am not the best person to address your problem. Mom has not had experience with that one, but the name has popped up a lot. Suggest that while you wait for more personal response, move you cursor up to "Find" . type in Seroquel. Careful to spell it that way. you will find reference to many results. Take care. It is nice to meet you. Glad you have found your way here.
