We're having some issue with her blood thinner and not sure what's causing it. Her clotting was a bit too long yesterday so they decided to leave off her coumadin dose yesterday and retest today. Well, today her test showed that her blood was even thinner. They're going to retest to make sure that the test wasn't defective. The nurse said that sometimes they use a shot of vitamin K to boost their clotting a little.

If it's not her coumadin that caused her blood to get too thin, does anyone else have an idea what else could do it?

Mom was on that and I am now too. I don't know what would cause it to get too thin except for the med.

When Mom's level hit close to 4. one time, our hhn told us she wanted Mom to eat 1-1/2 cups of cabbage (mom's fav) that night, not take the coumiden, then start back on a lower level the next night.

She told us green leafy vegs were ok, as long as you tried to eat the same amount every week. You didn't want to eat a lot of them, then suddenly quit eating them for a few weeks.

The green leafy vegetables will affect the level.

I know baby asprin affects the coumadin level too, making it too thin.

Good luck with finding out the culprit. This is about all the info that I could try to remember before a good amount of coffee this am.

That's a good thought, BC. I know this can be an issue with the fish oil supplements the doctor ordered last year, but those were discontinued back when she had the deep venous thrombosis and started the coumadin. I don't think she's taking any others right now except potassium to go with her lasix and a liquid calcium supplement.

Still waiting to hear back from the doctor with results from the retest.

This would be highly unlikely, T.O.R.P., but my Mom had a clotting problem 5 years ago which prevented them from doing a liver biopsy that she really needed until almost too late (they gave her fresh platelets and Vit K) . She wasn't taking anything designed to thin her blood except a baby asperin 1x day and her celebrix. What we discovered was the vitamin supplement she was taking for her macular degeneration (recommended by her eye doctor) had massive amounts of Vitamin E. Her PCP thought that may have been the culprit.
