I am severely pissed. I got Mother out of the hospital (3rd time in 1 1/2 months) and she expects me to wait on her like the nurses do. I don't get paid for that. I had about a month's vacation and am figuring that I need a whole lot more vacation, so I'm considering putting her in the nursing home. Today I battled the hordes at Wal-Mart mostly to get little goodies for her. She didn't even thank me until I reminded her to say thanks. She doesn't say please and thank you to me. She just expects me to be her servant. I've about had it up to here with that. It snowed here so I wore warm clothes to Walmart. I was sweating like a pig before I got my heavily laden cart outside to the car. Then I carried everything in while Mother feigned sleep. My back is hurt again and I was in pain this whole time, but it doesn't make any difference to her. I've about had it with the expectation that I'll be a servant forever. Those nurses get paid more than I do to satisfy every whim. I want to get paid what they do so I'm going to ask for $60,000 a year for caregiving. But if I move her to a nursing home, we'll lose a lot of money. Maybe I should have her pay it to me for 5+ years of caregiving. That may be a way of getting around the nursing home costs. What do you think?

A tip on the yellow type... if ya wanna see what you've written in the posting window, just HIGHLIGHT it... not a perfect world, but a reasonable workaround... Somedays/nights, it wouldn't matter WHAT size or color the type was... I can't see squat! Where's my seeing eye dawg when I need 'im?
Y'all DO know how to make type bigger in windows, huh? Press ALT, hold it down and hit then the "plus" ( + ) key; to make it smaller, hold down ALT then hit the "hyphen" ( - ) key. "She ain't heavy; she's my mother." Mom got her wings 11/18/2008 |

Jeeze. I HOPE you can read this BOH 'cause that'd mean that you have power... I hope you and your mom are snuggled up like bugs in a rug! Stay warm and stay safe! You are a wise teacher - I hope your students learned that specific lesson from you - called common sense! In short supply these days! I applaud your foray out into the wilds for drugs and provisions - it DOES make one feel kinda good and puffed up to rise to a challenge! Unfortunately, during natural disasters, the puffed up feeling doesn't last real long after the power fails and one starts freezing or sweating, depending on the particulars of the disaster. Me, I'll take a hurricane ANY day over blizzards and ice storms! Just to let you know I'm sitting vigil with you from afar, I am not gonna nuke my cold coffee - I'll drink it cold just like you are probably having to do! 'Course room temp here today is about 50° warmer than room temp in your ice palace! ICE PALACE!! That's IT!! Break out the vodka!!! "She ain't heavy; she's my mother." Mom got her wings 11/18/2008 |

See you all tomorrow.(BOH I have got in the habit of putting a flashlight in my pocket as soon as it gets dark esp. if it is windy. BOH, just finished registering on line to get hubbies meds with the VA.They say the online service is faster.Problem is , it took 15 min. to get a password they would accept, grr.
I saw on the tv you were to have bad weather. You really did a great job in getting prepared.Driving had to be the worse.Good for you.You met another challenge. I too wish I could have a slave for a day.Especially to do the cooking and cleaning up.I would sit down and enjoy every bite of food. But you know what they say about wishing, it will not do it. I do hope you do not loose power. It makes the stress that much more.Hapy to hear mom is doing something. That is good for her and good for you to know she is feeling better. Please stay safe. |

Well,Mother washed the dishes today. She cooked for herself and is doing better though I'm still the slave. Well, it gives me something to do. I'm also a slave to the dogs and cats. Ossie was neutered last week so we are on mange alert. So far, things are going well. I'm giving him mange medicine as well as antibiotics. However, I have to say that I would really love to have a couple of slaves to wait on me, but maybe that would be boring. Tonight, we are expecting an ice storm in eastern Oklahoma. The weather guy says our area will be really hard hit with up to 2 inches of ice. At 6 p.m., Mother's home health nurse called me and told me to go pick up Mother's medication downtown. I didn't know any medication had been ordered. I live about 7-8 miles from the drugstore and I can't see very well in the dark. I got dressed and drove down there and got the pills because I was worried that if we are stuck in the house for 3 or 4 days, her bladder infection would get worse. It was a hellacious trip since the glare of the water on the road made it really hard for me to see. I had lasik surgery a few years ago and it makes glare really unbearable. But I felt like a saint for doing it -- or maybe a martyr. So Mother has her antibiotics and I don't intend to leave the house until the ice clears off. I figure we will lose electricity pretty soon so I spent yesterday and today buying stuff for survival. We have two fireplaces so I bought a rick of wood. It burns really fast. I bought batteries, another flashlight, some oil candles because all the oil lamps were sold out. I have two oil lamps, but I figure you can't have too many. I stocked the fridge with food. If it's as cold as they say it will be I can put it in the garage and it will freeze. I had to go to two stores to find some de-icer for the driveway but I found some and bought two jugs of it. By George, I'm ready. I told the students that I would be deathly ill if the roads are icy, and they should be too. I plan to recover when the roads get better. I live in a hilly region and it's dangerous to drive on ice. I told my students not to come to class since I would be so ill. They felt that they were getting the flu or at least headaches today. So far, it's still just raining, but the weatherman said we should plan to wake up to no electricity and really cold temps. It's supposed to be 6 degrees one night soon. This is Oklahoma. It's 90+ degrees most of the time. I read that the Canadians are depressed because the grass is still green there. What the hell is going on? It appears to be global cooling in the South and global warming in the North. I think I may move to Canada where they have good weather.
P.S. What the hell does butter my butt and call me a biscuit mean? Just asking. |

When you are a caregiver, are there really any vacations? Every waking hour I have, I am thinking of my mother. I think it just wears you out. I actually got sick this week and could not even go to work or visit my mother since Saturday. Guess what, everything is still o.k.
Yes, you also start to wonder what the point is, going to the hospital, jumping through the hoops, answering the same questions, etc. Then, you get a small break, take a rest, talk to someone who sort of understands, you cry, you post here and you go again. This has been very cathartic for me. Coming to a non-judgemental place and 'airing my dirty laundry' and realizing that other people also have dirty laundry. It is truly a life changing journey, being the voice for someone that no longer has a voice. ...and yes, it is angering, and un-fair, many times I am acually grateful that my mother cannot recall everything I say... |

Okay, okay, I'll keep bitching. It's just that I'm appalled at what many of you suffer through. Mother can irritate me as can my brother and my job, but I feel sort of bad griping about minor things when so many of you have major problems. But I'll hang in there and keep griping. It really does do me a lot of good reading what you are coping with and that I'm not the only one with problems. I don't know how I managed before I found this website. I say thank God for computer and the WWW.
