Dad had a doctor appointment. Boyfriend drove my van (the one with the lift) to work, leaving us stranded. Air conditioner isn't working in his, but it's only 70 degrees out today.
Landlord is having new windows put in the house. Yesterday the crew removed every single window. Then they WENT HOME! No curtains, no windows, just huge gaping holes in the walls, and many many many bugs in the house. They finally showed up at noon today, and now they are all offendend that I lit into them and told them just what I think of their workmanship and total lack of common sense. VNA came to draw blood yesterday. Dad is on Coumandin and needs INR done weekly. Dumb broad asked him to stand up (using his electric lift chair and walker), then told him if he can stand he isn't housebound, so he should go to the hospital to get his blood drawn. She didn't appreciate my vocabulary either. My daughter had wisdom teeth pulled Friday morning and wants nothing except for me to sit with her and listen to her whine. In HER house. It's not "quiet" enough out here. Sorry, but Dad is the first priority. So, today I have decided to give the landlord a piece of my mind. (Did I mention that when it rained 2 weeks ago, and we got four inches of water in the carpeted/finished basement it took almost a week for him to get someone over here? And that all they did was spray Lysol and plug in one more fan? Basment stinks like mold so bad). Problem is, I only get his answering machine, and I want to yell at HIM! I think after supper I'll have to drive over there and show him my "I was in the service for 17 years and I can make a Marine blush" vocabulary. What's the worst that can happen? He throws us out of the moldy stinky house with no windows? Oh well. Deep breath. I feel better now. Think I'll go have Harry make me a pitcher of something. Jo O |

Jo, can you contact your local health inspector, etc. concerning the mold? Seems like if the landlord isn't willing to mitigate the problem, he shouldn't be able to rent a health hazard to folks... You could also write a letter to the editor of your local paper. Maybe someone would read it and offer you a decent place to rent... Oh man - the vehicles... It isn't enough that we are caregivers to old folks, most of us are also caregivers to our OLD VEHICLES!! I was having a REALLY (literally) sh*tty day yesterday then my husband (Mr. Icing On The Cake) announces that his (my old faithful) SUV won't start. Now that's bad news under most circumstances, but it is one that strikes TERROR into my heart. My husband is a mechanical moron bordering on being a serial killer of vehicles. Smart vehicles just roll over and refuse to start when he first sits in them... If his goes down, it means he has to drive MINE Knowing the level of his mechanical expertise, I told him to get out of the vehicle and lemme take a look. Yep. Turn the key and NADA. No click, no choking, no attempting to turn the engine over, NUTTIN'. The "nuttin'" stuck in my head, but I was already rattled, so I exited and announced - "Yep, won't start" - and headied back into the house. MoronMan yells after me - "That's it? You're gonna just leave it there? I gotta go to work tomorrow!" I COULD have pointed out to him that it was 10 minutes until 5 pm on a HOLIDAY, but I assumed he knew what day it was and he WAS wearing a watch... So I just said "WTF ya want ME ta do about it at this moment on a time/space continuim? There's nothing to do at this very moment, so I am going into the house and I'll figger it out." I think my unfledged 24 year old son got worried and went out to help him attempt to "jump off" the SUV (Perhaps it was because I told him that his stepdaddy was fixin' to try to jump it off by himself and if he fried the electric system in my truck, he would then have to use SONNY's truck to get to work, so he'd better get his big asp out there and make sure he didn't mess it up). I heard cussin' - that must have been because Mr. Fixit pulled the truck up on the wrong side of the SUV and the cables wouldn't reach - DUH! A few minutes went by and there was no more cussin' and no smoke or explosions... then the boy came in and announced that he had FIXED it!! I announced him the winner of the Hero Of The Day award!! I asked him what he did... Hubby's job causes huge amounts of dust and dirt to enter the vehicle. Normal folks would realize that protective measures and extra cleaning efforts are required. Not him. Riding in his SUV would cause ANYONE to have lung problems and would quickly kill any asthmatic... You should see the dust blow out of the interior when the windows are down... The EPA oughta arrest him for polluting the air along the interstate... It had gotten SOOOO dusty in there that a component of the burglar alarm had so much dust in it that the contacts could not make a circuit!! God bless 'em both! At least that was one problem down and I didn't have to kill anybunny for gettin on my last nerve... "She ain't heavy; she's my mother." Mom got her wings 11/18/2008 |

I'd love to say it got better, but... first the minivan caught on fire. It's a goner.
Then the big van with the wheelchair lift blew the water pump. Fixed that. Then the radiator went off like Old Faithful. Fixed that. Now it's back in the shop needing a fuel pump. That will bring the repair totals to $1200 for the big van. Spent $200 on a salvage minivan with body damage and we're gonna swap out the engines, hopefully end up with one that works. Of course, we're a little short of spare time around here, so this may be a long-term project. In the meantime, my boyfriend borrowed a bicycle to get back and forth to work, grocery store, and pharmacy. And yes, the whole danged place still smells like mold. Landlord hasn't returned my phone calls. So, I left a message suggesting he come over to pick up the rent check. We'll see how that goes. Of course we all know that chaos and stress do wonderful things to Alzheimers patients. Dad behaviors are outrageous this week, and I'm sure it's just because we are all so stressed. |
