how the hell do ya get the keys away from dad, when mom is in denial because she doesnt want to give up her private taxi (my dad, the driver !) , when i explain how damn dangerous it is for him to be drivin, logically she agrees with me. and 80% of the time, I drive them to their doc appts. but on days when i work mom says " dad and i just drove around the corner for milk " . Just around the corner can be dangerous when dad walks at friggin 2 miles per hour cause his reaction time is so slow and he cant remember which knob in the car is the lights and which ones are the hazard lights ! Every day Im not with them i worry that i will get a phone call from their local police station . My husband tells me to go to their local police and tell them that my dad has ALZ and hes driving while impaired. But how can i ask the police to do somethign when my dads nuerologist was NO damn help, I asked him to fill out a form to state that dad has ALZ, he did that. but then he said that legally, he has no right to submit this to the DMV so he handed the form to my mother ! You can guess where that form went.
Legally, what can i do ? HELP
PS I can hardly see this print while Im typing, no matter what color i choose, it types in yellow !
whats up with that ???

This is the very first article that was posted on the ECO website in October 1997... It is still accurate and relevant.

I went through this with my FIL. He hit a child (It wasnt serious just scratches) which didnt register at first, this was prior to the incident I saw by about 2-3 months. He got in the car and started this search mode and when I asked him what he was looking for he said the emergency brake...Wow you coulda knocked me over he had that car 25 years and couldnt find somthing he had been reaching for that long?! Took the keys and called my Husband to come home and tell him he was no longer allowed to drive! My MIL gave a little grief but knew she wasnt going to win and gave in. Depending on where you are you can go to the police station and ask for help the Doc will also need to confirm this in writing to the police they will go to your Dad and personally revoke his license. You might want to tell him that first it may sway him. In California if your pulled over (Elderly Driver) You get the license taken right on the spot and given a choice of how to get home, your vehicle is left where it is minus the keys which have to be picked up by a responsible driver. Theres a story for him to chew on...Hope it helps Smile
Im not 100% sure but I think if the Doc says he cant drive anymore the Doc reports this to the DMV? You might want to check with his Doc on this.

Curly Q this doctor is full of it.My husbands doctor demanded he stop driving or he would call the Dept Of motor vehicles himself.
yOU WILL JUST HAVE TO BE THE UNPOPULAR ONE AND TAKE THE KEYS.If he were to be in an accident and someone injured , then what. This is tuff for those who drive or depend on one who drives,But she and dad maybe the ones injured .You are going to have to be firm about this. Not an easy or pleasant situation to deal with.My husband was pissed with me but not the doctor. He had , had a couple od fender benders and friends were calling me about his bad driving. So I told his family doctor. He did not mince his words.

hmmm, several people in my support group had this problem...i'll tell ya what they did (may or may not help but what the heck)...
1) disable the car (of course when they aren't looking and you'd have to ask a mechanic how to do this)
2) go to the police station, let them know your mom got rid of the statement that the dr. gave her
3)go to the DMV and see if they can help
4) take the keys and any spares?
5) call the 1-800 Alzheimer's Association (the number is on their website)and ask their advice)

ok,hope that helps....and just so ya know..most of us have had to go through this....they parents get mad and so what?? they can get mad or die in a car accident..which is worse??
