I am confused about this 2 condition, My mom is 85 Years old, but still in good shape even thoug she already went throug 2 open heart surgery (1999/2003)which she recovered very good.
From last year her short memory has declined considerely, she can not keep track about what day is or she will say we are in 1955 if someone ask, she remember my cell ph# where she know can find me..she's been depressed due to the reason that she's spanish speaker, don't speak english and she stop going to Senior Center due to that fact is hard to socialize and make her feel bad. Some night she suddenly wake up at 1am and I found her watching tv with all ligths on..she said that thought that was already day light to get up..from that moment of confusion..her doctor prescribed her Aricep and said she has early sign of Dementia.. I am not sure if she really has Dementia or is just bcs she has senility.. Are those signs of Dementia?? Giann |

Hi Debbie Happy Birthday to you I hope your doing fine today We are all here and ready to listen if thats what you need. But please do talk to your Doc and if you think he is not helping choose another Doctor until you feel comfortable. Most people and Doctors cant imagine really how you are feeling inside, help them to understand tell them how you are feeling if the meds are having a negative effect tell your Doctor what they are doing and how its making you feel. Anxious unsettled whatever it is make them understand how you are feeling. Debbie can you keep a health journal? This might be helpful to you and your doctor. When you get started in the morning write how you are feeling if you have a mood swing write it down keep it with you at all times like it is an extension of you that way when you go to the Doctors appointments you can hand it over to him and he (or she) can read exactly how you are doing. I hope this helps you a little ********************************************** Well, butter my butt and call me a biscuit. |

Thanks to All, for your feedback!!
I'll discuss with primary doctor about more testing, sometimes doctors rush to tell you is this or that, without make any test..my mother used to have a neurologist and I asked him about those confussions episodes, he reply that was related to Dementia...I don't trust too much in them.. Thanks again.. Gianne |

Senility is kind of an archaic term, though it still gets used pretty widely.
Dementia is a symptom of an underlying disease or illness- it is not a disease in and of itself. Some causes of dementia -type symptoms may be reversible. Some are not. It is wise to get an accurate diagnosis of the true cause of the problems to accurately treat it. Unfortunately (but not uncommonly) your doctor didn't seem to think it necessary to refer you to a neurologist for further testing. I'd suggest asking for a referral. Both of you need to know exactly what you are dealing with , and what to expect. Good luck to you. "Whatever tomorrow brings, I"ll be there-with open arms and open eyes" |

It could be,but you need to get her to a Neurologist as he can do testing on her. Most primary Drs.don't know that much about Alzheimer's.Ask her Dr.for a referral, since she's medicare you maynot need one..........
