Our LO has diabetes and dementia. Except when she's sick, it's normally fairly well under control with a proper diet. We have to check blood sugars every morning. Now getting them to eat a proper diet with the dementia is a challenge.
There's been a few incidents of blood sugars getting all out of whack when she had an infection of some sort, or when on certain medications. They prescribed a pill to take, and we had to check blood sugars more often to ensure that her blood glucose wasn't getting too low. But once the health issue was resolved, we were able to go back to diet control. Honestly, this has been the least of our challenges. It IS important, however, to get these blood sugars under control. Our LO has diabetic neuropathy -- nerve pain in her feet and legs -- and some retina damage from the period of time her blood sugars were uncontrolled. This was actually related to her dementia in that, in its early stages before we were fully aware of her true situation -- she wasn't eating properly or keeping her sugars under control. |
