My 74 yr old husband got a clean bill of healthy from his dr on a Wed. by Sunday morning my world fell apart. He has become aggressive, abusive, forgetful, babbles etc. It was so bad, the police had to take him to the hospital where he remains unde heavy medication to help control his abusive behavior towards the staff.
They have done CAT, MRI, an EEG done but not read. He does have pneumonia in his left lung nd the dr Dx is the pneumonia caused lack of oxygen to his brain. From Tuesday until Saturday he was spraying chemicals (benzene, lacquer, lacquer thinner) without a mask an in an enclosed area. I belive his is causing his dementia. Any ideas? Has anyone heard of dementia from pneumonia? Please,my husband of 50 years is a empty shell.

V, it has been a while since you posted last. I am concerned about your husband and you. How is he doing? Have things changed with his dementia?

Please come back and let us know.

Im in agreement the chemicals is whats causing this behavior I have seen what huffing does to a person so its not such a stretch to believe this happened to him especially when his lungs were already compromised and spraying in an enclosed space.
What has the Doc told you so far V?
If this is indeed chemical poisoning do they have any hope he will come out of this?
Please keep us posted my heart goes out to you.
(((HUGS)))

Viking, wow, your hubby exposed himself to some angerous chemicals, especially the combination and in a closed area. You can get chemical pneumonia.Benzene is a very dangerous chemical.
When there is a form of congestion there can be some dementia.I would be concerned about the exposure to these chemicals.
Please keep us informed as to what the doctors say.I know you are stressed with the sudden change as would we all.
Having experienced this behavior with my husband I know what you were experiencing. But my husbands was due to a severe uti.
They should be doing blood work , toxin tests.
I am sure with the information you provided they will do all tests necessary to find the cause and course of treatment.
Sorry you are having to go through the stress of the unknown

Oh, Viking, I am so sorry. The infection from pneumonia can cause symptoms that include dementia, but I am concerned about the unprotected spraying. I wish I had a quick fix for you, but I can only hope that they will find something in the tests that will light the path. Perhaps when the pneumonia responds to treatment, you will find that the answer is in the infection. Please keep us informed. Remember, you need to breathe, and get your rest. Be good to yourself. You will need your strength.
