This is my first time here so --- patience please. After MUCH soul searching and research my sister and I placed Mom in a very nice SNF that will accept Medi-Cal when the $$ runs out (soon at this rate). Last visit with Mom the sociakl worker told me that the nurses believe Mom is too "high functioning" and that Medi-Cal won't pay for her care.

Now what??? There is no $$ and I know she will qualify in a couple of months. Board & Care would be a good option but they won't accept Medi-Cal and only managable incontinence (whatever that means). There is no place for her or anyone to care for her -- she has dementia (mild), incontinence (bowel & bladder), Chron's disease, macular degeneration.

What now ??? Any suggestions out there???

Hi! Thanks for the response. I couldn't figure out how to get back to this site Frown Got it now!!
So - since I posted this we have moved mom to a Board & Care -- since it is so much cheaper than a NH we've "bought" a year of time before the $$ runs out.
All she has is SS - no other assets. We've been taking care of her for about 5 years but now she is more than we can take care of.
My irritation (to put it mildly) is that the NH had to approve her before we put her there -- they had doctor admission info., etc. And you know how hard changes is for these folks! My fear now is that when the $$ runs out (+/- a year) we are back to the NH that won't take her.
I don't see how she is too high functioning for NH. I guess MEDICALLY she isn't physically in such bad shape. Just can't remember anything, can bathe, bowel/bladder incontinence resulting in bladder infections, sores, hygiene is virtually non-existent (though she does try- just can't get it right).
Ok -- now I'm rambling. Just the frustration dealing with those who think they know better than -- well, than me!

Welcome in Dan's gal dont worry we have all the patience in the world so you have come to the right place Wink
So what you are saying is she would be much better suited to an Assisted living facility rather than a NH.
Ok has she got any kind of insurance or SS income?
Did your mom have property owned by her? If so this could help you and your sister afford care for your mom.
The Medical Social worker that you are mentioning did she go over all of moms income, insurance, and SS with you in the first place before you placed her?
They will be able to see what is available out there if anything.
