Hi, I'm new here. I've been searching the internet but can't find an answer to my question about transportation from the nursing home to doctor's appointments. My brother is in a NH in Indiana. The NH scheduled a doctor's appointment and then told my mom (who is 80) that they didn't think the ambulance ran that late and she would have to take him. He's a lot bigger than she is and the appointment is in a city that she's not familiar driving in. I live in Ohio, not close. I was just wondering what their responsibility is to provide transportation, if at all. Does anyone know where I could look it up? The way the NH has been in the past, I don't know if they would tell me the truth if I called and asked them.

Thanks so much!

Thanks, everyone, for your suggestions. I just wanted to let you all know that my mom called again and they arrange for transportation for my brother and my mom both. According to them, there will be no charge but I would be willing to pay if there was one.

Thanks again everybody for your support. I don't feel so alone now in my situation.

Nuring homes here in California generally have a resident doctor on staff. If further specialization is required, the nursing home provides transportation to the apprpriate facility within a certain distance.

Call you local Department on Aging for any program sin your brtoher's community that will assist him in getting to his appointments.

Then they should not have scheduled the appointment for that late and should call and change it!!

Different places have different arrangements - you might look to see if they have a website and if it contains any information, but the only way to know for sure is to ask them or read the papers that were signed when he was admitted to their care.

Good luck! Big Grin

There are NH transports so please do not fear just call them up and ask them if they could get one to take your LO to and from these appointments...I am pretty sure there will be a charge though. The one I have for my MIL is $80 for a round trip (its a little extra as there are stairs in my home) Kitcat it sounds like you are having problems with the nursing home...are you? If so you might want to check him into another facility.... Confused
Hope this helps. Smile
