it was quite a reunion for mom and dad. mom was so excited I had to keep telling her to backup at the door so he could get in with his walker.

right away it was chaos though, dad needed his glucose monitor and was panicking because we couldn't find it anywhere. BIL finally went out and bought a new one and dad said it was the wrong one...but it was ok. it took a while for the boys to sit with him while they all tried to figure it out....I basically sat with mom and reassured her that all was going well and to get some rest. she has her nightstand light on in her room, but we always have to turn out the living room light so it doesn't keep her awake....not sure when this started, (and she would not let the bedroom door be shut) but last night when she said to turn off the light, I just had to tell her we needed it to be on because we were walking around and needed to see. I shut her door and she was asleep in a couple of minutes.

BIL stayed the night, sleeping in the recliner (no bed for us now, it's either the couch or recliner...but DH brought our camping futon today, we'll see how that works) I'm beat today because I had a sleep apnea event last night. I will be going to a caregiver support group tonight and see what info I can glean.

Dad is already questioning the meds that were prescribed on his release form which DH has gone to pick up at pharmacy. When dad gets frustrated or angry, besides swearing he has this 'clicking' sound he makes....we heard it a lot last night!! lol

I know they want things to be like they were a few weeks ago, just the two of them and their routine....I hope we can get through it without too much hardship....DH is starting to show the wear and tear and now it's time for me to take up the slack where I can. BIL will be back for the weekend routine.

So this was just to let you know what's up for now....they are down for naps, so I think that's what I need too!!

Ruth, the atmosphere seems to be so positive for you fil. So good he wants to walk and get stronger.

If it were my H, I would be so happy to have him back home also!!!

You and H are so good to be there to help them, you deserve a huge pat on the back and a big hug!

Ruth I am getting tears in my eyes reading about the wonderful loving attention your family has for one another. It is clear that they did an excellent job raising their sons, And that your husband made an excellent match with you.

That said, it sounds like you all are adjusting to this situation, and that Dad is determined to make the best recovery possible. You have found the key, do all you can to keep life worthwhile, and have no regrets to haunt you down the road. I am so very pleased to make your acquaintance.

Ruth this could be one of 2 things with his BSL's its either stress or its his food and I see a little no no here you gave him so I am going to say it has to be the food.
Is this diabetes controlled by pill or injection?
Is he sneaking food other than what your giving him if not go over the list of foods he ingests on a daily basis.
Also I have to ask when his BSL's are taken. Heres the reason why and I will defend this to the ground against ANY MD or nurse
BSL's should ONLY be taken in the morning before breakfast (unless it is mandatory for reasons other than the normal day to day testing)
Accurate BSL's only occur in the morning because they will fluctuate during the day while consuming sugars and starches as well as fresh fruit and veggies.
If there are sugar substitutes this will also raise BSL's try using honey to sweeten things its in a natural state and is not bad for a Diabetic like sugars and substitutes, bread and peanut butter I know thats where you got a spike Peanut butter has copious amounts of sugar in it, couple that together with bread thats both starch and sugar and your going to get that spiked reading.
If he wants a snack give him fresh fruit, no to canned and bottled theres way too much sugar and preservatives in that.
Anything white he needs to stay away from Rice pastas sugars sauces anything that turns into starch.
Oh yes one other thing for the meantime just to help regulate the levels dont feed him beef, chicken & fish is fine poached baked or broiled they do get the BSL's up but it doesnt stay up long beef I actually had higher readings the second day with fish and chicken BSL's were low and constant. Wink

oh my, a week has gone by and it seems like forever!! I think we are establishing a routine, especially with food like dad had before the surgery. They have a 3 day rotation of food, certain things that we are trying to emulate, but he seems to like it when I cook for DH and I and he gets to sample it. lol

He has seen the visiting nurse a couple of times, yesterday she seemed concerned about his blood pressure....his weakness....and the blood sugars don't seem to be low enough, so they are at the lab this morning to get blood tests and he will see his heart dr. today. The nurse must have convinced him that he's OK....he kept asking her if his heart was good, his lungs too, and when she said they were ok, she meant they need to be worked more to get better. So after she left, he made the effort to do 'laps' on the back porch with his walker. I had cleaned it off thinking we would get things out of the house, but he seemed to like the idea of walking out there...it didn't wear him out like walking from the living room to the bedroom. Maybe the carpet makes him more tired, or the lack of fresh air in the house!! But he probably overdid it, his sugars were high this morning and he felt weak. I sent him off with half banana and peanut butter on bread to eat after the blood is drawn so he doesn't have to wait to get home before he eats. The nurse said the sugars would be high because of stress and dr. said not to let them get over 200.

It was so cute the other day, we found them lying in bed together, just holding hands, but I think it made mom feel good to have him close. They haven't slept together in years!!

I hear them home now, so must go. See ya.

Ruth, my mom started with the clicking sound and then went into her famous for quite a few years....shush shush shush shush. All day long we'd hear that with the clicking. Good luck with everything. You are lucky to have family support to help.
