My nana is 94 years old and is getting very frail. I was speaking to my mum on the phone and she told me that my uncle (who is the care giver for nana), found her on the floor in the morning next to the bed.

I'm not sure if she fell out - which seems unlikly, or was trying to get to the toilet by herself, which she knows she cant manage by herself and shouldn't be trying to.

She really cant navigate properly by herself any more, and normally calls my uncle on the intercom, but this time she didn't.

Her hands arn't good any more and she cant work small buttons or similar.

does anyone know if there's any kind of pressure sensor that can be put under the rug beside her bed or something similar so if she fell and was stuck again my uncle could be summoned?

This one is quite expensive but gives you an idea so you can shop around. Look under falls for the mat with remote alarm. I use a similar product. It's a motion detector that lets me know when mama is trying to get up out of bed.

Welcome, AustAndy!

There are all kinds of products out there.

I don't know anything about this company, but they show a variety of them and give an idea of the cost. You might check with nana's doctor to see if he can write a prescription so that you can attempt to get medicare to reimburse a portion of the cost the equipment you need.

Another thing that nursing homes do is put rails on the bed to remind them not to get up by themselves, and use a hospital-type bed that can be lowered near the floor so that if they do get up before you can get to them, they don't fall as far. Sometimes you can get a little medicare help for these as well if the doctor finds it necessary.
