Does anybody have experience with toileting aid products that extend the arm and hold the toilet paper? My dad has a hard time reaching to clean after a BM.

I found several types of these toilet-paper-holder tools. BUT – how would one keep one of them clean? Wash and dip in bleach after each use?

Bidets are the best bet for people with limited mobility. It's difficult for my father to wipe himself because he cannot turn around completely. I purchased a bidet a few months ago from http://www.bidetking.com. I would suggest an electronic bidet, although they're a bit more expensive. The site has pretty good sales and competitive prices though.

I got my dad this one: http://bidetking.com/product_i...t-seat-w-remote.html.

It allows him to use the bathroom independently, which helps with his pride and gets me out of a dirty job too. It's basically an electronic tabo (I'm Filipino too.) My aunt runs a small convalescent center and is planning on installing bidets in every room because she sees how much of an IMMENSE HELP it's been. You should look into it! Good luck!

Love that cartoon! Says it all! Razz

This is a physical-limitation problem, in fact he is less than 1/2 inch from being able to reach with the toilet paper. The OT person is trying some stretching exercises and I keep hoping it will work. If he could go to the bathroom independently, he could go to restaurants with friends and family. Forget the driving, forget the dressing, forget the cooking, it's the bathroom that will keep him homebound.

That dirty job - well, I guess I've signed up for it - but I can't really expect friends and family to do it...

If the reason the person is unable to reach around, hold the paper & do the job with no muss, no fuss, is because of some physical setback, such as a fall, etc., well, try anything that might help them to regain their ability... BUT... if the reason they are having so much trouble is related to a progressive cognitive decline, I don't EVEN think that something like this is gonna help because it's just gonna make more of a mess!

Assisting people with toileting, especially ones of opposite sex, is a task most of us understandably want to avoid, however it comes under the caveat of:

it's a dirty job, but SUMBUNNY'S gotta do it... Roll Eyes

You can also purchase bidet attachments for regular toilets. They run from around $100 for a basic one up to whatever you want to spend depending on the features you want.

Thats gotta be thee most interestin thing Iv seen yet.....
Seriously though to keep it clean, use a 10-1 ratio, mix up in a spray bottle 1 part bleach to 10 parts water
That should keep it nice an tidy...I hope???
I have never seen one of these things up close an personal so I dont know whether it has grooves or whatnot that could trap feces.
Personally Id toss it in a bucket after each use that has a bleach solution...
I have to say though kinda neat....kinda scary Big Grin

As a side note my MIL uses something called a "tabo" (sp?) (its a Filipino thing)
Its usually a large plastic cup with a handle (anything will do that looks like that I remember once she had an old 4 cup plastic measuring cup for one)
She fills it with water and "rinses" herself after each visit or should I say "movement".
Can he manage that hun?
