Here is something that may prove helpful for those of us who have MANY medicines to manage, many times a day for dosing, or for elders who are having a hard time remembering to take their meds on their own. ALSO, it would be helpful in the situation where an elder is left in the care of a hired caregiver who cannot take responsibilty of administering medications, but can "serve" those meds which have been specifically desiginated and prepared.

From my mother's Rx newsletter:

quote:
Earlier this year, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved a new type of pill box--one that works like a computer. The box is called EMMA(tm), or Electronic Medication Management Assistant.

The pill box is about the size of a bread maker and holds one month's worth of medication. When it is time to take your medicines, the pill box makes a noise and shows a message on its computer screen. From there, it works just like a vending machine. You push a button on the screen, and the medicines come out.

Because it is like a computer, the pill box can be linked to the Internet. With special software, your doctor, nurse or pharmacist can tell the pill box when you should take each medicine and how much.

When our LO did occupational and speech therapy to help with her cognitive issues, the therapist had a catalog full of really amazing technology. Some of it was actually covered in part by medicare.

Unfortunately, in her case, reminders were of limited use because she wasn't able to consistently follow up. Someone had to WATCH her take her pills, or physically escort her to meals or she'd forget as soon as we hung up the phone.
