6 teens charged in nursing home abuse
By WARREN WOLFE, Star Tribune
Last update: December 3, 2008 - 9:58 AM

Six young women are accused of groping and taunting seven residents at the Good Samaritan nursing home in Albert Lea., or witnessing the alleged events.

The eight young women attended high school together and worked together part-time at the Good Samaritan nursing home in Albert Lea, Minn.

A criminal complaint filed Monday says they also laughed together early this year as they spat in residents' mouths, poked and groped their breasts and genitals and at times taunted them until they screamed -- or witnessed those events.

Charged Monday with maltreatment of seven residents were Brianna Marie Broitzman, 19, who faces 11 charges, and Ashton Michelle Larson, 18, who faces 10. Neither returned calls Monday seeking a comment or the name of their attorneys.

The six others, all 17 years old at the time of the alleged abuse, were identified only by birthdates and initials. Four were charged Monday in juvenile court with failure to report maltreatment.

The allegations became public in August when state Health Department inspectors concluded that four aides, to make their "work fun," had abused 15 frail residents.

Broitzman and Larson were charged Monday with fifth-degree assault, abuse of a vulnerable adult by a caregiver, abuse of a vulnerable adult with sexual contact, disorderly conduct and failing to report suspected maltreatment. All are gross misdemeanors, with a maximum penalty of a year in jail and a $3,000 fine for each count.

If found guilty, "they most likely will face suspended jail sentences and probation, so they'd have the threat of jail hanging over them if they get in more trouble," said Freeborn County Attorney Craig Nelson, who filed the charges Monday.

The incidents allegedly occurred between Jan. 1 and May 1. The home fired the four aides cited in the Health Department report soon after it learned of the allegations in May.
...quoted from the Minneapolis-St. Paul Star-Tribune website...

So after reading this story, I Googled and found an earlier story about the incidents from AUGUST of this year...

WHY did it take so LONG to charge those sociopathic girls?!!!

I don't understand the attitude of the DA about this, nor do I understand only a year in jail for crimes of this magnitude... I HOPE he is DELUGED with emails, phone calls and letters about this case!! Red Face

I'd have been more surprised if the lawyers hadn't pulled this stuff. I'm just praying they don't get away with it.

And so it goes...dragged out for more time.

I just love the follow up comments I think someone forgot there was an investigation BEFORE these girls were taken into custody....irregardless of what the PD did or didnt do the fact remains a seperate unbiased 3rd party investigated and found the original allegations to be true so much so they called the PD into the case. Dum dee dumm dumm duuuuummmmm.... Roll Eyes

Hi Mary N. Hopefully they will get a year for EACH charge to serve consectutively. That will amount to 10-11 years, but we shall know more next month.

Regardless of the sentence, I would like to see their mug shots permenantly placed on the bulletin boards in the staff rooms of all ALs and NHs in the country.

Now that's a thought... if you have an LO in NH run off a copy of the mug shots and the charges to take to the facility. Later, update with the sentencing. Well, actually that could backfire. I would hate it if bored young girls got some fresh ideas.

This must be complete nightmare for these poor victims. Even though they may have dementia, does not mean they don't know what is being done to them.

One year is not nearly enough time to spend on this type of crime. They should be marked as sexual predators the rest of their lives.

Glad to see that the charges haven't been dropped, etc. This will be an interesting case to follow all the way through to sentencing.

this is so sad.Goes to show you that a pretty face does not mean compassion for others. They need to be punished and made to give much hours of community service. This also need to be put on a record for all future employees to see.
Are we surprised these things happen? They know these people are dependent on them and so vunerable.
But , too many young see those afficted as imperfect and cast aways. They have no intolerance for anyone they view as damaged goods.

I hope they get maximum sentence of a year for each assault. They are sadists and don't deserve to ever be loose in free society again.

MSNBC has taken an interest as well as CBS. HOPEFULLY, the media will pick this one up - they all reported on it on Tuesday, when the story of the charges broke, but I didn't see ANY of the network media really PUSH this story.

PLEASE yell about this one!

After reading more about this, here are a BUNCH of links about this story, including the two charged as adults MySpace pages...

An aside - in between the listings on Google for this story are interspersed many sites which purport to rate nursing homes. None that I clicked reported this... That's a little discomforting... Roll Eyes

Another thought - if ANY of the juveniles charged in this case had been rectally probed, would the charges be the same? Red Face Is this not a case of discrimination against the elderly by state statute? Or a violation of the Equal Protection clause of the US Constitution? Red Face

What if these "workers" had been daycare workers and done these things to children? Or "workers" at a state school for the mentally retarded? Would the charges be "gross misdemeanors" then? What if the workers had been men or black or hispanic or gay instead of pretty white teen girls? Red Face
