This was interesting!

The growing evidence that caffeine consumption may help treat or prevent Alzheimer's disease has received an extra boost from two new studies.
Florida researchers report that a daily dose of 500 milligrams of caffeine -- the equivalent found in five 8-ounce cups of coffee -- reversed memory issues in mice bred to develop Alzheimer-like symptoms. After two months on the stimulant, the mice rebounded to score just as well on memory tests as normal mice of the same age that had never exhibited signs of dementia.
The studies, published in the July 5 online edition of the Journal of Alzheimer's Disease, also found that caffeine cut by half the mice's excessive blood and brain levels of beta amyloid, the protein linked to characteristic plaque found in human Alzheimer's disease.
"The new findings provide evidence that caffeine could be a viable 'treatment' for established Alzheimer's disease, and not simply a protective strategy," lead author Gary Arendash, a University of South Florida neuroscientist, said in a news release. "That's important because caffeine is a safe drug for most people, it easily enters the brain, and it appears to directly affect the disease process."

Wow. Remember the coke war we had at the SNF a couple of months ago? Wonder if somehow her body knew what she needed ...

So we treat this like we treat anything and everything else - it might work for some, but it doesn't for others.
Ya just never know - who thought of pulling those "hangy down things" on cows and drinking what came out of THERE? Or eating that thing from the chicken's 'behind'?
Or that stuff grown from mold would be a great antibiotic? Which some people are deathly allergic to, by the way.
And just like anything and everything else, of course a lot more testing and proving has to be done before a cure or vacine is declared.
I for one am happy that the coffe cure is just a rumor at this point. Should it be proven, it will be taken off the market, available by prescription only, and cost half your yearly salary.

From our experience, I can't imagine that a few cups of coffee per day could be any less effective than the close to $600 per month (partly paid by insurance) combination of aricept and namenda has been for our loved one.

I understand that it's helpful for some dementia patients. But I am convinced that these drugs have been as useless as a sugar pill for my MIL.

Come on Snowy, Smile we would all like to believe coffee is good for us, and I do believe that all those Incans and Mayans had to know something about that. Cool Who knows, I don't expect a miracle, but if there is one, it is probably right under our noses Eek. Or in our cups Wink. Caffeine is powerful stuff. If they are on to something, big business will make sure we never hear another word Confused.

You are a skeptic, I am a cynic. Lets try to stay positive, LOL Big Grin

Clearly, we love coffee. That makes it hard to believe in caffeine as a medicine. I really don't know, but am hopeful about the future of this research, and am thrilled to see a reason to keep up the latte. Caffeine is a potent element in the natural pharmacy.

I still think even if this isn't it,,, we will find our answers in nature. I just hope the answer to our needs wasn't just plowed under or burned down to extinction yesterday somewhere.

No, she's still there. She's a very conscientious nurse, just doesn't seem to have wrapped her mind around the concept that there comes a point where quality of life should overrule minor medical considerations. My MIL will never recover. It's a new mindset for people whose training is to heal people. But she's not the one directing my MIL's care right now; the hospice nurse is in charge. MIL really hasn't been asking for cokes recently and hasn't been raiding her little bedside fridge for herself either. Declining in multiple areas, though she's been a tiny bit more perky over the past week. I guess we'll see how things go. It's not outside the realm of possibility that she'll perk up enough to get booted from hospice. We live, as we have the past ten years, one day at a time.

If coffee skyrockets to twenty bucks a cup, I blame you, Bobcat, for giving them that idea! Razz
