This is a really touching story. It brings into focus how we must all anticipate possible changes in our lives and be prepared to make sacrifices if necessary. It's never too soon to start thinking about what if...
I'm in a quandary right now about how to deal with a friend that I feel may be developing memory problems. Should I tell her husband my suspicions based on recent conversations I've had with her? Any suggestions?

MERRWID, you are right. This area (the Roanoke Valley) is expecting to almost double its senior population in 25 years. Not just because people grow older, but because people are moving to the area to retire.
This series of articles is especially timely for that area, but these stories are very familiar and being played out all over the country. * the crystal ball (*) is in the shop>>>> |

I love stories like this. Every once in a while they appear in our local papers too.
Perhaps that is beginning to change though - people everywhere are becoming aware that seriously ill loved ones aren't always placed in nursing homes. And there's also "the aging baby boomers" (sorry, but there it is!) who are providing care now, but will themselves need care. And there are a LOT of us! Even if all the nation's care facilities were top notch, there are not enough and probably won't be. I hope the government eventually sees the shift from facility to home care as a positive step and will create (and finance?) programs to serve us rather than hinder our efforts. |
