My husband & I want to know if we are appointed Guardianship over my mother do we become responsible for her legal debts. Because my brother who has POA is shrewd we are concerned with
how he will react if we are given guardianship. I know w/o a doubt he used allot of her money already and then waited till her assets could not be traced and put her in NH. I fear he will set us up to pay his bills he may have in her name. I do not underestimate him. Also I read allot of posts saying it will cost allot if you take on guardianship. ($5-10,000) and just to be ready to handle it before taking over guardianship of loved one. Anyone know what that would be for?

Also in about 3 weeks I will be at hearing for conted guardianship where my brother will fight me tooth and nail.
I do have a lawyer but my ombudsmen said to be prepared for the judge to ask pertinent question of the issues with a fix for them about why I feel my brother is not fit to make decisions in best interest of my mother. Has anyone been to a hearing like this I just want to know what it will be like TIA Laura

Family members giving mediation a try before taking a final step like Guardianship is are growing in numbers. Family Caregiver Mediation, under the umbrella Elder Mediation is a rapidly growing field. To learn more about it, go to:

www.alzheimerfamilycaremanagement.com

there is a link on the home page which takes you to an interview on the process; special articles on the topic can be found on the page "Preferred Websites".

More articles are located on Ask Karen at www.carepathways.com.
