I need to find a way to get a copy of my dad's death certificate so that my mom can do what she wants to with the house. I'm having trouble finding any resources online to help me do this.

She wants to remove his name from the title, since he's been dead since 1991, but in order to do that, I have to fax a death certificate to the mortgage holder, along with a letter from my mom stating that she wishes his name to be off the title.

I've tried searching 'vital statistics' in the state where her home is, and all kinds of other searches, with no results.

I'm not exactly 'savvy' on this stuff. I just want to find out how to get a copy of his death certificate, so she can have his name taken off the title deed for the home.

All suggestions will be greatly appreciated!

Harmony, I'm not really sure, but you may have to do actual leg work on this one, not on line. Try contacting the court house in the city or county where his death was registered, clerk of the court. Also, the funeral home that handled the details at the time may still be able to provide you with a copy. Who was the executor of the estate? That is a good source. Any minute now the really experienced folks are going to jump in here. You are not alone.

Thank you so much for your response.

Unfortunately, the legwork would be 3,000 miles away. But I think I have found a way to get it. My mom had a strong box and left the key to my sister, who still lives in the house, so she's going to look for it and send it to me if she can find it.

But I still want a 'back-up' plan in case she doesn't find it.

Thank you so very much for your response! ;o)

In Texas, you can get them from the state Dept. of Health. The state has a website, or you can write them, or you can go to the county health dept. Wherever you go to get birth certificates, that's where you go for death certificates as well.

I'd imagine most states are similar. In which state do you live?

I live in Oregon, and mom lives with me, but her house is in South Carolina, and my dad was born and died in South Carolina.

I wonder if I could get a death certificate from the mortuary that handled his burial?

This is the link to the S.C. Dept of Health website with a phone number and other info for obtaining certified copies of a death certificate.

Way to go T.O.R.P., What did I tell you, Harmony? This is such a good place to be. I'm still learning my way around the web, and I.ve gotten many good tips here on how to find what I need. There is so much info out there I used to just give up, it was over whelming. I can do a reasonably effecient search now, thanks to some help I've gotten here. When you wake up in Oregon you will have a nice surprise.

I won't be dropping in at Harry's tonight, but I'll let Harry know you each get a cyber ale on my tab. Good stuff, he brews it himself. He's a master. Course if that's not to your taste, have what you want. Talk to you soon.

Well, keep them somewhere safe. We had quite a few extras after my father-in-law passed but had occasion to use one last week! (He's been gone over 10 years. We discovered some stock still in his name.)
