I'm new to this forum and learning so much.
Question - Medicare covers SNF for 100 days and then needs resting period of I believe 60 days. After that time does Medicare kick in again for another 100 days even if it is for same medical problem? Heard conflicting reports.
Thanks much

Yes. From the 2008 Medicare & You Book...
quote:
SKILLED NURSING FACILITY CARE
Semi-private room, meals, skilled nursing and rehabilitative services and other services and supplies (only after a 3 day minimum inpatient hospital stay for a related illness or injury) for up to 100 days in a benefit period. To get care in a SNF, you must need skilled care like IV injections or physical therapy. Medicare doesn't cover long-term care or custodial care in this setting.

quote:
DEFINITION OF BENEFIT PERIOD
A benefit period begins the day you go to a hospital or SNF. The benefit period ends when you haven't received any inpatient hospital care (or skilled care in a SNF) for 60 days in a row. If you go into a hospital or SNF after one benefit period has ended, a new benefit period begins. You must pay the inpatient hospital deductible for each benefit period. There is no limit to the number of benefit periods.

For best information, go to the medicare website as things DO change from year to year and also depend on the specific coverages your LO has...
